Angelus World Clock & Weather Station

Before world clocks lived inside airports and weather forecasts refreshed every few minutes, there were objects like this.

Swiss maker Angelus managed to fit an entire sense of adventure onto a desktop. Time, temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure and a rotating globe all come together in one beautifully engineered sculpture that feels equally at home in a library, an office or overlooking the sea from a summer house.

The first thing that catches your eye is, naturally, the globe itself. Oceans finished in a rich turquoise lacquer contrast against warm gilt continents, evoking the hand-coloured atlases and nautical charts that inspired generations of explorers. Surrounding it is a brass world time ring engraved with twenty-four cities, allowing the globe to serve as both a handsome conversation piece and a practical world clock.

Nestled into the centre is Angelus' hand-wound eight-day clock. The satin white dial keeps everything wonderfully balanced, with applied brass indexes, dauphine hands and a finely knurled hobnail bezel giving it just enough detail without distracting from the globe surrounding it. Winding it once a week becomes part of the ritual, much like winding a favourite wristwatch.

Turn the globe and you'll discover that nearly every side has a purpose. One hemisphere houses a thermometer calibrated in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. Another displays a hygrometer measuring humidity, while the third features a beautifully executed barometer whose weather indications read almost poetically: Stormy, Rain, Change, Fair, Very Dry. Together they create a complete mechanical weather station, quietly tracking the conditions around you without batteries, software updates or charging cables.

The construction is equally satisfying. The globe rotates smoothly within its brass meridian ring, while the sculptural sea-green feet capped with polished brass spheres give it remarkable stability. It carries reassuring weight in the hand and has the tactile quality that makes you instinctively want to interact with it.

Vintage desk clocks are one of the last corners of horology that still feel wonderfully underappreciated. Pieces like this offer remarkable craftsmanship, genuine utility and enough personality to change the feel of an entire room. Once you've lived with one, it's hard to imagine going back to an empty desk.
