The Early Sports Dress Watch.
Audemars Piguet was making some rather interesting watches long before the Royal Oak entered the picture. This 1960s Tonneau Automatic is a lovely example, with its distinctive C-shaped case and elongated lugs that look almost like they've been pinched at the ends. There's a hint of Gérald Genta's design language here, from an era when Swiss watchmakers were beginning to have a little more fun with their cases.
Crafted in 18k yellow gold, the 35mm case has a curved profile that sits beautifully on the wrist. Its original cream dial keeps things wonderfully simple, with alternating gold and silver baton markers, a framed date window at three, and a central seconds hand. There's a nice balance between the adventurous case design and the very sensible business happening inside it.
Underneath is the self-winding Caliber K2072, complete with an 18k gold rotor, giving this vintage AP the convenience of an everyday watch. The case has also developed some lovely patina around the bezel and behind the lugs, adding a little character to an otherwise exceptionally well-preserved example.
