Cute As A Button.
If Cartier and Piaget are already on your radar, allow us to introduce another French jeweller deserving of a little more wrist time. Founded in Paris in 1858, Boucheron has a wonderful history of experimenting with unusual watch designs, particularly when it comes to how they attach to your wrist. This little Baby Carrée from the 1970s is a great example of why we have such a soft spot for the brand.
Measuring a rather adorable 19 × 19mm, the Baby Carrée packs a surprising amount of character into its solid 18k yellow gold case. The broad, vertically brushed bezel frames a matching champagne dial with just two gold hands. Turn it sideways and you'll find finely ribbed case walls and a matching crown, adding another layer of detail to an already handsome little square.
But the real party trick is how the strap attaches. Boucheron developed a clever sliding mechanism that allows the strap to slip into the case from above, creating a seamless connection without traditional buckles. It's beautifully simple to operate, and the result is an uninterrupted band of leather around the wrist. Boucheron was so proud of this system that its patent number is engraved directly on the caseback, alongside the Boucheron Paris signature.
Perhaps most impressive is how beautifully this example has survived. Small, angular gold cases are particularly vulnerable to decades of polishing, which can soften their edges and erase the finer details. This one remains exceptionally crisp and unpolished, with sharp corners, straight case walls and beautifully preserved brushing. French eagle's head hallmarks are found throughout, confirming its 18k gold construction.
For anyone who appreciates the design language of vintage Cartier and Piaget, Boucheron offers another fascinating chapter in French watchmaking. And at just 19mm square, this particular chapter happens to be especially cute.
