Honey, Espresso And Gold.
Boucheron spent much of the twentieth century approaching watches differently than traditional Swiss manufacturers. As one of Paris' great jewelers, the maison often viewed a watch as more than a movement and a case. Materials, construction, and wearability were given equal attention.
The Carrée is one of the clearest examples.
The tortoise shell dial immediately sets this watch apart. Rich shades of honey, caramel, espresso, and dark chocolate create a rich surface, with patterns that are unique to each piece. As was common for many pre-1970s Boucheron watches, there is no logo on the dial allowing the material itself to carry the design.
Its square 18k yellow gold case remains wonderfully compact, with faceted surfaces that add just enough dimension without distracting from the dial. The model's name simply translates to ""square,"" though the Carrée is perhaps better remembered for the patented strap system hidden within the case. Rather than using conventional lugs, the leather strap slides directly into the watch with a satisfying click, creating a seamless transition between strap and case.
Turn the watch over and the patent reference remains engraved on the caseback alongside the Boucheron Paris signature. Inside sits the manually wound Boucheron calibre 2323, housed within a case produced by renowned French case maker Jules Pierson.
We've handled several Carrées over the years.
What makes this one memorable is the rare tortoise shell. The clever engineering and Parisian design language provide the framework, but it's the dial that keeps bringing you back for another look.

Presented in very good vintage condition with light signs of honest wear throughout.
The 18k yellow gold case remains strong with crisp lines and light hairline marks.
The tortoise shell dial is exceptionally well preserved with beautiful variation in tone and no notable damage observed.
The caseback remains clearly signed Boucheron Paris with visible patent numbers.
The original gold-tone hands remain excellent, and the crystal shows little to no markings. The original tortoise shell crown remains intact with no cracks, with a small section being worn down over time.
Fitted on a brand new leather strap.
The manually wound Boucheron calibre 2323 is running well at the time of cataloguing.
