The Royal Bath.

Every collector has a category that quietly takes over the search history. For many Cartier enthusiasts, it's enamel.

This little Baignoire is exactly why.

At first glance, it almost feels more like a bracelet from Cartier's jewellery atelier than a watch. A vivid cobalt blue enamel flows across every oval link before arriving at the tiny Baignoire case, where the design reaches its natural conclusion. Between each blue oval sits a white gold connector set with factory diamonds, creating a graceful cadence that carries your eye from one end of the bracelet to the other. Nothing feels added afterwards. Every component belongs exactly where it is.

The Baignoire, French for "bathtub," has been one of Cartier's defining shapes for over a century. Its elongated oval softened the traditional round watch into something unmistakably Parisian. Here, Cartier allowed the bracelet to become a continuation of the case itself. Rather than ending where the lugs begin, the design simply keeps flowing.

Then there's the enamel.

Applying vitreous enamel during the 1950s and 60s demanded extraordinary craftsmanship. Finely ground glass pigments were carefully placed into recessed gold surfaces before being fired in a kiln at temperatures high enough to permanently fuse the colour to the metal. Every trip into the furnace carried risk. Too much heat and the enamel could blister or crack. Too little and it would never bond correctly. Achieving a flawless result across an entire bracelet required remarkable precision, which explains why surviving examples like this are encountered so infrequently today.

"Colour this good usually comes with a canvas, not a movement."

Collectors are accustomed to seeing enamel reserved for a case or a decorative accent. Finding a Cartier where the colour continues uninterrupted from bracelet to case is something else entirely. The preservation here only makes it more special. The royal blue enamel remains rich and vibrant throughout, framed by warm yellow gold and punctuated by white gold factory diamond-set connectors that catch the light without ever distracting from the design itself.

Nestled at the centre is a tiny white dial that feels wonderfully proportioned to everything around it. Black painted indexes, blued steel hands and the classic Cartier signature give it all the charm of a mid-century Cartier, while allowing the bracelet to remain the focal point.

Sotheby's recently launched The Shapes of Cartier, celebrating some of the maison's most imaginative creations. It's difficult not to picture this Baignoire as one of the stand-out lots. It has everything collectors hope to find in vintage Cartier: an iconic case shape, exceptional craftsmanship, extraordinary preservation and a design that still feels remarkably fresh more than half a century later.

Cartier has always blurred the line between watchmaking and jewellery. Sixty years later, this little Baignoire still refuses to choose a side.

Overall, an exceptional example presenting in outstanding vintage condition.
