Paris, Switzerland, New York.
Early and mid-century Cartier is a rewarding territory for collectors. There’s an enormous variety of case shapes and bracelets to discover, backed by some serious watchmaking. Cartier’s partnership with Jaeger, drawing on LeCoultre’s expertise in movements and case construction, is a big part of that appeal. This 1942 Duoplan Snake Bracelet Watch is a particularly good reason to explore it.
Its story takes us from Paris to Switzerland to New York. Designed by Cartier in Paris and made in Switzerland, it was imported into the United States through the European Watch & Clock Company for sale at Cartier’s New York boutique. All of this during the Second World War. We don’t know who bought it, but we would certainly have liked to see the rest of their collection.
The European Watch & Clock Company, or EWC, grew out of Cartier’s partnership with Jaeger in the early 1920s, supplying movements for Cartier watches and clocks. Those signatures are particularly sought after by collectors today because they connect a watch to this important early collaboration. Here, both the movement and inner caseback carry the EWC name, while the movement’s EXU import code confirms its American destination.
You can see the Art Deco influence in the slender 18k yellow gold case, with its stepped shoulders and long rectangular dial beneath a curved mineral crystal. The black dial is an uncommon find, especially with gold Arabic numerals and broad hands rather than the Roman numerals many of us associate with Cartier. Look closely above twelve and you’ll find the Cartier signature, still legible after more than eighty years. The Swiss hallmarks and engraved Cartier inventory markings also remain clearly visible.
Inside is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s manually wound calibre 403 Duoplan. The clever part is its two-level construction, which fits larger, more robust components into a narrow movement. That gave Cartier room to work with these slender proportions. Winding takes place at the back, leaving the sides of the case uninterrupted and the mechanics tucked away against your wrist.
Then there’s the snake bracelet, which makes a convincing case for wearing more gold. Its closely fitted, wave-shaped links bend around the wrist, and the folding clasp disappears into the pattern when closed. It has the appeal of a fine gold bracelet with a small black dial worked into it, so you can enjoy it as jewellery while having quite a lot to discuss with your watch friends. At a touch over 52 grams, there’s a satisfying amount of substance behind those slender proportions.
Jaeger-LeCoultre selected this model for Capsule II of The Collectibles, its programme of vintage watches curated and offered by the manufacture. You can understand the choice: the Duoplan engineering, stepped case and intricate bracelet give it plenty of interest before you even get to the Cartier connection.
Finding one with a black dial, EWC signatures, clear inventory markings and an intact snake bracelet brings all those details together. The harder part might be taking it off long enough to show someone the movement.

Very well preserved overall for its age, with wear visible on close inspection.
The 18k yellow gold case retains defined stepped contours, with surface scratches and occasional small marks.
The black dial retains its rich colour, with small wear and fading to the Cartier signature, which remains legible.
The caseback retains clearly defined numbering and inventory markings, with visible Swiss hallmarks.
The hands show surface ageing, and the curved mineral crystal has light surface marks.
The snake bracelet remains uniform, with surface scratches and no broken links, and the folding clasp closes into the bracelet pattern.
The manually wound calibre keeps accurate time.
