A 1976 Love Letter.
Mazie,
If you’re reading this, it means you turned it over.
I chose the Tank because it already felt like it had been here forever. Even in 1976, it carried that kind of presence. The design had been around for decades, born from Louis Cartier’s original 1917 concept inspired by the silhouette of Renault tanks crossing the Western Front. By the time this piece was made, the world was changing fast. Disco, deregulation, quartz ticking louder by the day. Cartier responded by going back to its archives and bringing back what mattered. The Louis Cartier line returned in the early 1970s when the Paris, London and New York houses reunited under one banner. This reference 78086 is part of that revival.
Some designs evolve. This one simply continues.
The proportions are exactly what they should be. Slim 18k yellow gold case, brancards running straight and true, polished to a soft glow. The classic railroad minute track frames bold Roman numerals that Cartier has used for generations. Blued steel hands. Swiss signature at six, confirming production in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Inside sits the manual-wound caliber 78-1, thin and dependable, the kind of movement that asks for a few turns each morning and gives you decades in return.
And then there is the crown. Beaded, with a particularly sharp sapphire cabochon. The extra-pointed ones always feel special in hand. It catches light in a way that reminds you this is jewelry as much as it is a timekeeper.
But what makes this one different is what I had engraved on the back:
Mazie
5-16-76
Love Sid
Some collectors hesitate when they see an engraving. I see proof that this watch was once the most important thing someone could give. In the 1970s, walking into Cartier and choosing a Tank was not casual. It meant something. It was a marker. A promise. A memory made permanent in gold.
This Tank has lived that life. And now it’s ready for the next chapter.
On the wrist, it does what a Tank Louis has always done. It sits flat, almost flush, disappearing under a cuff until the gold catches the light. Andy Warhol wore his without even setting the time. Princess Diana wore hers with everything. Jackie Kennedy wore hers like it belonged there. The design has passed through artists, presidents, actors and collectors without ever needing revision. It has not changed because it never needed to.
In a world that refreshes every six months, this stays the same.
It comes fitted on a brand new black buffalo leather strap with an 18k yellow gold Cartier buckle. The pairing is exactly right. The case remains in excellent overall condition with only light surface hairlines consistent with careful wear. The engraving is crisp and legible, just as it was meant to be.
Mazie, I bought this because I wanted something that would outlast trends. Something that could be yours, and then someone else’s someday.
If you’re reading this now, perhaps it’s your turn.
Love,
Sid
