The Coulissante Duoplan takes something as ordinary as checking the time and turns it into a small performance. Press the gold panel with your thumb, slide it down, and the dial appears. The action is smooth, spring-loaded and dangerously satisfying. You will do it far more often than necessary.
Made in the 1950s, the watch measures 15 × 32mm in solid 18k yellow gold. Its slim rectangular case is topped by three finely textured panels, with the centre section sliding to reveal a white dial with applied gold markers and beautifully preserved printing. Closed, it could easily pass for a curious piece of gold jewellery. Open, the secret is out.
The idea was made possible by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Duoplan movement, introduced in 1925. By arranging the movement across two levels, LeCoultre could build a compact watch without reducing everything inside to dollhouse proportions. It was an important chapter for the company, helping transform LeCoultre from a specialist movement maker into a manufacturer producing complete watches under its own name.
Inside is the manual-winding calibre 409, wound from the back so that no crown interrupts the side of the case or gets in the way of the sliding mechanism. It is a clever solution to an already clever watch, and a reminder that Jaeger-LeCoultre was having quite a lot of fun with engineering long before watches became so serious.
This example has the condition to match the concept. The case retains sharp edges, defined bevels and deep, legible hallmarks. The sliding hood still operates with strong spring tension, while the downward-angled lugs give the small case a surprisingly assertive fit on the wrist.
The same model was selected for Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Collectibles program in June 2023, when the manufacture curated and sold a group of important vintage pieces from its history. That example was priced north of $20,000. This one is offered for a fraction of the figure, with the condition, mechanics and historical importance very much intact.
For anyone whose collection already has the familiar classics covered, the Coulissante Duoplan brings something more playful to the table. It is uncommon, mechanically fascinating and almost impossible to show someone without letting them have a go. Just be prepared to ask for it back.
