Heavy Gold, Small Hours.
At first glance, this appears to be a beautifully made gold bracelet. The watch reveals itself only after you find the small champagne dial tucked between the links, measuring just 13 millimetres across. We have always loved bracelet watches that treat timekeeping as a well-hidden extra, and this Jaeger-LeCoultre takes the idea remarkably far.
The bracelet is formed from tightly arranged curb links with rounded, almost half-cylindrical profiles. Each solid 18k yellow gold link overlaps the next, giving the bracelet substantial heft while allowing it to move fluidly around the wrist. At over 85.5 grams, Jaeger-LeCoultre used plenty of gold here. Thankfully, they remembered to leave a little room for the movement.
That movement is the manually wound Duoplan calibre 403. Its components were arranged across two levels, allowing Jaeger-LeCoultre to fit a capable mechanical movement inside such a small case. Winding is handled from the reverse, removing the need for a visible crown and helping the watch blend naturally into the bracelet.
The accompanying extract from the archives confirms production in 1948, giving the piece a particularly interesting place in history. France was still rebuilding after the Second World War, with rationing yet to disappear completely. Someone walking into a Jaeger-LeCoultre boutique and leaving with a hefty gold bracelet watch would have been quite the sight.
Cartier also retailed this exact design with its own name on the dial, which says plenty about how popular and well executed the format was. Here, you get the same solid-gold construction, Duoplan movement and bracelet-led design at a far more convincing price point.
For all its weight, the cleverest part is how little space the watch needs. Almost the entire piece is devoted to those substantial curb links, leaving just enough space for the practical matter of telling time.
