A Stirrup, Softened.
Jaeger-LeCoultre has spent most of its life making everyone else look good. Before its own name carried weight with collectors, its movements powered watches signed Cartier, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin. That quiet dominance eventually turned inward, and when JLC focused on its own designs, pieces like this Étrier started to appear. Distinct, slightly playful, and unmistakably theirs.
“Étrier” translates to stirrup, and the inspiration is easy to see once you notice it. The case sits suspended between two curved gold bars that mimic the shape of a rider’s stirrup. The strap threads through them rather than attaching conventionally, which gives the watch a kind of floating presence on the wrist. It feels more like an object placed on you than something strapped down.
Most Étrier models lean toward sharper rectangular or square forms inside that frame. This one takes a different route. The inner case is softened into a rounded, almost television-like shape, which brings to mind pieces like the Cartier Gondole Horizontale. It’s less rigid, more fluid, and noticeably harder to come across.
The dial keeps things clean and composed. White lacquer with elongated Roman numerals that stretch and bend ever so slightly to follow the case. The handset is slim and proportional, sitting low and centered, letting the shape of the watch do most of the talking. There’s no seconds hand, no interruptions, just time presented simply.
Then there’s the crown, tucked underneath at six o’clock. It disappears from view when worn, which keeps the profile uninterrupted and adds a small moment of discovery when you handle it. It’s one of those details that doesn’t ask for attention but earns it anyway.
Sized at 25 by 28 millimeters in 18k yellow gold, it wears with more presence than the numbers suggest thanks to the open lug structure. Paired with a brown alligator strap and its original Jaeger-LeCoultre gold-plated buckle made by AW, it lands exactly where it should. Elegant without trying too hard, a little different without being difficult.
This is JLC in a more chic mood. Still precise, still thoughtful, just willing to have a bit more fun with it.
