A Flower From Fleurier.
Parmigiani Fleurier was founded in 1996 in the village of Fleurier, a place whose name translates to “land of flowers.” That origin feels less like trivia and more like context when you look at this watch. Because the Ionica 8 in pink mother of pearl feels as though it could have grown there.
This example, circa early 2000s, comes in a 34 x 45mm 18k rose gold tonneau case with beautifully stepped and ribbed detailing. It has real presence in the hand, but it’s the dial that takes control of the conversation.
The pink mother of pearl is extraordinary. It is not a single tone. In softer light, it reads almost ivory with a faint blush beneath the surface. Under direct sun, it blooms into layers of rose and deeper pink, shifting between warm and cool hues depending on the angle. It feels alive. One moment it evokes cherry blossoms in full bloom. The next, it feels like a late afternoon in Monaco or a pastel façade in Miami Beach. The material carries depth and movement that no lacquer or paint could replicate.
The layout balances classic watchmaking codes with a bit of personality. Applied rose gold Breguet numerals rise above the dial, their curves and serifs catching light against the iridescent backdrop. The central hands are well proportioned and elegant, while the sub-seconds at six introduces a blued hand that gives just enough contrast to break the warmth of the pink and gold.
At twelve, the eight-day power reserve indicator arcs gracefully across the top of the dial. The golden crescent and “8 DAYS” inscription serve as both a technical note and a daily reminder that this is not an ordinary manual wind watch. Wind it once and it keeps going for over a week.
Turn the watch over and the Ionica’s true significance becomes clear. The caliber PF110 was among the first in-house movements developed by the brand and was designed specifically to follow the curvature of the tonneau case. At the time, it would have been far easier to use a round movement and adapt it. Michel Parmigiani chose to build a shaped caliber that actually fills the case.
The finishing is exceptional. Côtes de Genève striping runs across the plates, anglage is clean and well executed, and the independent plate over the mainspring barrels fits with impressive precision along the curved edges of the neighboring bridges. The movement features 28 jewels, is adjusted to five positions. It is still produced today by Vaucher and has even appeared in watches for Piaget and Tiffany, which speaks volumes about its quality and longevity.
We do not often curate modern pieces, but this Ionica belongs here. It represents the early years of an independent Swiss house determined to build properly from day one. It carries technical depth, serious finishing, and a dial that feels like it was carved from a flower in bloom.
On the wrist, it feels substantial yet romantic. It blends craft and color in a way that few watches manage. For collectors who appreciate independent watchmaking and are drawn to beautiful shapes and rare materials, this is a piece that delivers on every level.
And in this case, it does so in pink.

Overall, the watch presents in excellent pre-owned condition with strong case definition and a vibrant, well-preserved dial.
The 18k rose gold tonneau case retains sharp stepped and ribbed detailing with light surface wear consistent with careful use.
The pink mother of pearl dial is clean and richly colored with no visible cracks or damage, and the applied Breguet numerals remain crisp.
The caseback displays the serial number and Swiss hallmarks clearly, with edges still well defined.
The hands are clean, the blued sub-seconds hand retains strong color, and the sapphire crystals are clear.
The black leather strap is in very good condition and fitted with an 18k rose gold Parmigiani buckle.
The manual-wind caliber PF110 is running well and the eight-day power reserve functions as intended.
