The Baguette Box.
If you’re going to make a rectangular platinum dress watch, and you’re Patek Philippe, there are rules. Rule one: it must be immaculately constructed. Rule two: it must be terrifyingly restrained. And rule three? Add 4.10 carats of perfectly-matched baguette diamonds for the fun of it. This is the 5007P—a 1980s Patek that breaks its own rules with such elegant precision, it probably deserves its own Geneva salon.
Let’s start with the obvious. The case is platinum. Not white gold, not steel, not rhodium-plated anything—actual dense, precious platinum. Its flat brushed caseback is reassuringly heavy, its lines sharp, and its weight quietly immense. On top of that is the bezel: 44 baguette-cut diamonds, each invisibly set, stepped perfectly into place like Patek was building a gemstone fortress instead of a dress watch.
Baguette diamonds are notoriously finicky. They have to be uniform. They must be clear, consistent, and expertly cut—because unlike round cuts, there’s nowhere for flaws to hide. And Patek didn't just set them across the bezel, they laced them around the lugs too. This thing wraps light.
The dial? Dead white enamel with eight round brilliant indices and four larger baguettes at the cardinal positions, all set in white gold chatons. The hands are traditional blackened dauphines—another play in contrast and clarity. And then there’s that movement: Patek’s Caliber 177/02 manual-wind with Geneva Seal and a 43-hour reserve. You don’t see that movement, of course. You just feel it hum when you wind it.
It measures 29.5mm wide and 31.5mm tall—compact and crisp, with presence. This is not a watch meant to sit in a vault next to a Nautilus. This is for someone who already has the Nautilus, the Calatrava, the annual calendars… and wants something Patek never made for the masses. Think of it as the tuxedo you only wear twice a year—but it never fails to start a conversation.
The diamonds take center stage, but it’s the platinum that funds the show.
