A Classic, By Any Standard.

Patek Philippe put an extraordinary amount of work into making the 2526 look this simple. Behind the cream enamel dial sits its first automatic calibre, finished with a level of care that most owners would never see. Add an 18k rose gold case and a second signature from Caracas, and you begin to understand why collectors get rather particular about these.

Introduced in 1953, the reference 2526 helped establish Patek’s approach to the automatic wristwatch. Its calibre 12-600 AT remains one of the great achievements of postwar watchmaking, with 30 jewels and an engine-turned 18k gold rotor. The polished bevels and Geneva stripes were hidden behind a solid screw-down back, leaving the watchmaker with the best view in the house.

The enamel dial deserves equal billing. Producing its smooth, fired surface was a demanding process, but Patek had a practical reason for choosing it: resistance to the discolouration that affects conventional dials. That creamy appearance is part of the material’s appeal, rather than something that necessarily took decades to develop. Applied gold indices, dauphine hands and subsidiary seconds give it a wonderfully legible face, with the rose gold bringing warmth to the whole arrangement.

“A collection can take plenty of turns. A Patek like this gives it an anchor.”

At approximately 36mm, the case remains an especially appealing size today. Its rounded bezel and curved lugs give the watch a fullness that suits the enamel beautifully. Inside the caseback, the Geneva Key 2 mark identifies F. Baumgartner, the specialist casemaker behind the 2526’s gold case. Most 2526s were made in yellow gold; rose gold accounts for a considerably smaller share.

Accompanied by its Extract from the Archives, this example was manufactured in 1957 and sold in 1958. The Extract also confirms its rose gold case and enamel dial, placing those details firmly on the record.

The Serpico y Laino signature adds a Venezuelan chapter. The celebrated Caracas jeweller retailed Patek Philippe watches and, in the tradition of important retailers of the period, placed its own name on selected dials. Here, that connection extends to the S&L marks on the caseback and original 18k gold buckle.

Patek’s pricing at the time gives some sense of the 2526’s standing. A gold example on bracelet could cost nearly as much as its reference 2499 perpetual calendar chronograph. The house clearly regarded time-only watchmaking as worthy of its greatest efforts. For a collector, that makes the 2526 a reference around which an entire Patek collection can be built.

Great overall vintage condition.

The 18k rose gold case remains thick and well defined, with surface wear consistent with age.

The original cream enamel dial presents cleanly throughout, retaining crisp, clear Patek Philippe and Serpico y Laino text.

It shows very fine hairlines approximately between 10 and 1 o’clock and between 8 and 6 o’clock, best seen under close examination with a loupe and not readily noticeable during normal wear.

The caseback retains its S&L retailer stamp, with gold hallmarks remaining visible at the back and between the lower lugs.

The original PPCo 18k gold buckle bears a clear S&L retailer stamp.

Movement was inspected by our watchmaker and is keeping accurate time at the time of testing.
