Patek Philippe Calatrava 5022J

Vintage Patek has become rather crowded lately. References that spent decades appealing mostly to dedicated collectors are suddenly filling wrists, auction catalogues and Instagram feeds. The enthusiasm is deserved, but it has also made the next chapter of the Calatrava story considerably more interesting.

The Ref. 5022J comes from the 1990s, a period when Patek Philippe was still working with many of the proportions and decorative techniques associated with its earlier dress watches, but packaging them in a watch that feels remarkably easy to own today. At 33mm in 18k yellow gold, it lands in a particularly useful middle ground for anyone who loves vintage Patek but actually plans on wearing it regularly.

The dial is where the 5022J earns its keep. Its guilloché begins tightly around the central pinion and gradually opens as it travels toward the edge, creating a radial pattern that almost resembles looking down at the lines of a globe. The scale gets larger as it moves outward, giving the surface an unusual sense of depth and movement without relying on colour or complication to make things interesting.

Patek layered quite a bit onto that backdrop. Applied yellow gold Roman numerals sit above the guilloché, black minute markers define the outer track, and slender black hands bring enough contrast to keep everything legible. At six sits the subsidiary seconds register, itself finished with concentric detailing and a printed track. There is a lot happening here, yet the dial still reads immediately as a Calatrava.

Inside is Patek Philippe's manually wound Calibre 215, a wonderfully slim movement that helps keep the case profile low. That matters because the appeal of a watch like this is as much about how easily it lives on the wrist as what you see through the crystal. The thin case, straight lugs and 33mm diameter make it equally convincing with tailoring, a T-shirt, or whatever exists between those two after 5 p.m.

This example has another detail collectors will appreciate: the original Patek Philippe leather strap remains fitted, along with its original signed 18k yellow gold buckle. Add the excellent overall condition and you have a remarkably complete example from an era of Patek that still feels underexplored.

The Ref. 96 may be enjoying its well-earned victory lap, but the 1990s deserve a closer look. The 5022J retains much of what people are currently chasing in vintage Calatrava design, while adding a more contemporary build and one of the more interesting guilloché dials we've encountered from the family.

For anyone looking for an everyday Calatrava with a little more going on than first meets the eye, this is a very good place to land.
