The Perfect Dress Watch.
The Calatrava has been part of Patek Philippe's collection since 1932, taking on countless personalities along the way. From the early reference 96 to more contemporary interpretations, the formula has remained remarkably consistent: a beautifully proportioned, time-only wristwatch that looks just as good today as it did generations ago.
Our reference 3520D, sold in 2001, finds a lovely middle ground between vintage charm and modern practicality.
For collectors curious about vintage watches but hesitant about their age or everyday wearability, this is a wonderful place to start. You get the character of an old-world Calatrava with the benefits of more recent production, including a sapphire crystal and the ultra-thin, manually wound Caliber 177.
The dial is where this example becomes especially interesting.
3520s are commonly found with a white dial and printed Roman numerals. Here, we have a far more charming combination: a champagne-gold dial with applied Breguet numerals. Their flowing, almost handwritten forms are complemented by Breguet hands, giving this Calatrava a distinctly vintage personality.
Surrounding the dial is Patek Philippe's famous Clous de Paris hobnail bezel, with rows of tiny pyramids adding wonderful texture and depth. It's a detail I never tire of admiring, especially considering the craftsmanship involved at this scale.
At 32mm, the proportions are wonderfully versatile. There's also a delightful contrast between the round case and the original 18k yellow gold Patek Philippe buckle, whose angular, shield-shaped design provides an unexpected finishing touch.
Completeness is another major attraction. This example retains its original Patek Philippe alligator strap, signed gold buckle, Certificate of Origin dated August 4, 2001, and accompanying leather pouch, and envelope. It's a satisfying set.
The Calatrava is often considered the quintessential dress watch, but we'd encourage you to think beyond formal occasions. A suit, a crisp white T-shirt, or your favourite knitwear would all be perfectly suitable company.

The watch is presented in excellent overall condition, accompanied by its original Certificate of Origin dated August 4, 2001, and additional Patek Philippe accessories.
The 18k yellow gold case is exceptionally well preserved, with defined lugs, crisp Clous de Paris decoration, and minor surface marks.
The champagne-gold dial is exceptionally clean, with well-preserved applied Breguet numerals and printing.
The caseback retains its circular brushed finish, while the case hallmarks remain visible and defined.
The original hands and sapphire crystal are in excellent condition, with no significant blemishes visible.
The original Patek Philippe black alligator strap shows small signs of wear and is fitted with its original signed 18k yellow gold buckle.
The manually wound Caliber 177 has been freshly serviced by our watchmaker and is keeping accurate time. Previous service history is unknown.
