Fortune Favours Green.

Piaget understood that a dial cut from the earth could offer something paint and metal never would. Every vein, cloud and concentration of colour belongs to that single slice of stone, giving each watch a face that cannot be repeated.

By the 1970s, the maison had built an extraordinary menu of ornamental dials, but jade occupied especially rare territory. Across cultures, the stone has carried associations with prosperity, protection, longevity and good fortune. Its importance goes back thousands of years, particularly in China and Mesoamerica, where it was treasured far beyond its decorative appeal. Fine jadeite is also one of the most valuable opaque to translucent gemstones, with the best material commanding prices comparable to ruby, emerald and sapphire.

Here, the dial is a small landscape of mossy green and milky white clouds, pad-printed with gold Roman numerals and the Piaget signature. The jade remains pristine, with no cracks or blemishes, an especially important distinction for a stone dial of this age. Gold dauphine hands complete the palette without covering much of the stone, a welcome bit of manners when the dial is this good.

“Stone dials already make each watch unique. Finding jade inside a fully hobnailed Piaget case takes the idea somewhere far more exotic.”

Piaget gave the surrounding 18k yellow gold case nearly as much attention. Rows of tiny pyramid-shaped hobnails cover the bezel, top, bottom and case sides, interrupted by polished bands that outline its rectangular form. Traditionally, this pattern is produced through engine turning, with intersecting cuts creating each raised pyramid. The hooded strap attachments disappear beneath the case, allowing the black leather strap to meet the gold directly while keeping the profile clean and compact.

Inside is Piaget’s manual-wound calibre 9P, introduced in 1957 at only 2mm thick. The movement helped establish the maison as a leader in ultra-thin watchmaking and gave its designers greater freedom to build watches around unusual stones and elaborate gold cases without ending up with a brick on the wrist.

The watch is completed by its original 18k Piaget buckle. Jade has been carried for good fortune for centuries. Piaget simply found a particularly handsome way to keep it close.

The watch is in very good vintage condition with signs of little wear.

The 18k yellow gold case retains strong proportions, crisp hobnail detailing and polished dividing bands, with surface marks consistent with age.

The green jade dial is pristine with no cracks or blemishes, and presents natural variations of green and cloudy white, with visible ageing to portions of the printed gold signature and Roman numerals.

The caseback retains its brushed finish, hallmark, reference number 9151 and serial number 168411.

The gold dauphine hands remain well preserved, while the sapphire crystal shows light surface wear.

The watch is fitted to a black leather strap with its original 18k yellow gold Piaget buckle.

The manual-wound Piaget calibre 9P is functioning at the time of cataloguing.
