Piaget Onyx Braided Chain Bracelet

A great bracelet watch asks you to forget you're wearing a watch.

It's a surprisingly difficult balance to achieve because the moment the case becomes too dominant, the bracelet stops feeling like jewelry. Add a protruding crown or bulk up the profile, and what began as an elegant gold bracelet suddenly feels like a watch strapped onto the wrist instead of something designed as one continuous piece.

Piaget spent decades refining exactly that idea.

By the 1970s and 1980s, the maison had become one of the few names capable of designing the goldwork, cutting hard stone dials, setting precious gems and producing some of the world's thinnest watch movements under the same roof. Having those crafts work side by side gave Piaget remarkable freedom, allowing them to blur the line between jewelry and watchmaking in a way very few manufacturers ever could.

Everything about this piece follows that philosophy. The intricate woven bracelet flows uninterrupted into the case, while the recessed push-piece hidden on the caseback keeps the profile completely clean.

The dial is really intricate. Rather than assembling several pieces of onyx into a frame, Piaget carved a single slab and hollowed its center to create one uninterrupted border around the pavé diamond dial. It's a far more demanding way to work with brittle stone, which makes finding an example that has survived untouched all the more rewarding. The deep black onyx gives the diamonds remarkable contrast while perfectly echoing the warm glow of the surrounding yellow gold.

This is where Piaget separated itself from almost everyone else. Goldsmithing, gem setting, hard stone craftsmanship and ultra-thin watchmaking all came together in one object, with none trying to outshine the others. The result feels every bit as relevant today as it did forty years ago, especially as bracelet watches continue to enjoy a well-deserved revival among collectors who appreciate jewelry as much as they appreciate horology.
