The Man Who Made Mechanical Time Go Digital.
The jump hour is having a moment again.
Over the last few years, brands like Audemars Piguet, Cartier and others have reminded collectors just how captivating it can be to tell time through apertures rather than hands. Yet long before modern brands rediscovered the format, a watchmaker from Le Locle named Robert Cart was already obsessed with the idea.
And unlike many forgotten names from the era, Cart's influence ran deep.
Born in 1871, Robert Cart founded his own manufacture in 1920 and quickly became one of the most important pioneers of jumping-hour and wandering-hour wristwatches. Through a series of patents and inventive display systems, he helped transform what was essentially a pocket-watch curiosity into something elegant enough to wear on the wrist. His work became so respected that houses including Vacheron & Constantin, Breguet, Gübelin and Sandoz commissioned watches and movements from him during the golden age of Art Deco.
This watch comes directly from that world.
Housed in an 18k white gold rectangular case dating to the early 1930s, it presents time through two apertures set against a dark grey dial. The upper window displays the jumping hour. The lower aperture carries the minutes across a curved scale. Every sixty minutes, the hour disc advances instantaneously to the next numeral, creating a mechanical performance that remains oddly satisfying nearly a century later.
What makes examples like this particularly appealing is their honesty.
Many surviving jump-hour watches from the period were heavily worn, fitted with lower-grade movements, or simply used hard throughout their lives. This one feels entirely different. The crisp rectangular case retains its strong Art Deco lines and, at 17mm by 35mm, still carries surprisingly good wrist presence for a watch approaching a century of age. The dark dial provides excellent contrast against the ivory-coloured discs. The apertures remain sharp and easy to read. Even the oversized crystal contributes to the character, acting almost like a display window into a miniature mechanical instrument.
Then there is the caseback.
Engraved with a winged insignia and the initials "RTC," it hints at a life lived before becoming a collector's object. Military presentation? Aviation connection? Personal commission? The answer may never be known, but it adds another layer to an already fascinating watch. The best vintage pieces tend to leave a few questions unanswered.
Viewed today, it is easy to see why collectors continue to chase jump-hour watches.
Part of the appeal is technical. Part is historical. Most of it comes from the simple fact that they still feel fresh. A watch designed in the 1930s that displays time through two small windows should not feel modern in 2026, and yet here we are.
