The 1980s gave us shoulder pads, car phones and a healthy appetite for gold. Vacheron Constantin clearly had a wrist in the proceedings, and this Harmony suggests someone in Geneva was enjoying themselves.
For a house so closely associated with classical watchmaking, the Harmony is a welcome reminder of its more adventurous tastes. Its design, attributed to Daryoush Shafa, brings the rectangular case and brick-style bracelet together in one continuous sweep of solid 18k yellow gold. If the vintage Piaget Polo has caught your eye, there’s plenty to love here, with the added pleasure of finding something further off the usual collector circuit.
At 23mm wide, this is the larger Harmony format, originally offered for men, though we’d happily leave that distinction in the old catalogue. The bracelet gives the watch its character, and at a little over 123 grams, there’s plenty of gold to appreciate. Its approximately 19cm length also offers welcome room for a larger wrist, with removable links for adjustment.
What makes all that gold so wearable is the finishing. Brushed surfaces soften the overall effect, while the dial’s mirror-polished outer sections frame a brushed centre. That contrast gives the face depth without crowding it with detail, leaving the crisp Vacheron Constantin signature room to breathe.
Inside, the thin calibre 1010 quartz movement helps keep the profile close to the wrist, with a sapphire crystal above the dial. This example is exceptionally well preserved, from its sharp engravings to its original dial, and has received a fresh battery.
