Vacheron Constantin gave this rectangle a rather good set of curves. The four rounded lugs bring to mind the brass doorknobs of an old European apartment, reduced to wrist size and given a considerably better job.
Dating to the 1940s, this Tank-style watch carries the dressiness of the period without feeling precious about it. The broad rectangular case provides plenty of room for applied Arabic numerals, a silvered dial with raised enamel detailing, and small seconds at six. There’s something especially satisfying about those numerals: familiar, easy to read, and full of character before you’ve even noticed the name above the hands.
At approximately 40mm from lug to lug, it’s a generous watch for its era. The substantial crown belongs comfortably alongside those rounded lugs, while the straight bezel keeps the whole arrangement tidy. It’s a combination that makes you appreciate how much personality a case designer can fit into four corners.
The gold has developed a warm amber patina around the bezel and case edges, beautifully complemented by a rich cognac alligator strap. A well-defined Swiss gold hallmark remains visible on the case side, an encouraging detail alongside the preserved case contours.
For a collector drawn to early Vacheron, there’s plenty to enjoy here: an unusual case, handsome typography, and age that contributes to the appeal. Preferably enjoyed with sleeves rolled up.
