Among the many creatures in Audemars Piguet’s menagerie of design, few slithered with as much swagger as the Cobra. Made in the late 1970s through early 1980s, this one coils around the wrist in 18K white gold, its sculpted scales forming one of the most intricate bracelets ever fitted to a watch. The case flows seamlessly into the weave, creating the illusion that metal has been poured and patterned by hand.
The dark blue dial, punctuated by diamond indices and sharp dauphine hands, plays the role of restraint against the textured excess of the bracelet.
The name “Cobra” was no accident. Viewed from above, the cushion-shaped case mimics a snake’s head, and the alternating polish and ribbed finish of the bracelet gives the illusion of scales in motion. The larger size of this example (27mm x 32mm) gives it presence, while the svelte profile and manual-wind calibre 2080 remind you that finesse, not bulk, was AP’s calling card before the era of the Royal Oak.
At the time, Audemars Piguet was still a quiet powerhouse—making fewer than 20,000 watches a year, most by hand, and selling them to those who already knew where to look. The Cobra line remains one of their most distinctive designs, with a few mythical examples famously worn by the Shah of Iran. This one, in white gold with diamond markers, might be the most understated of them all, if you can call a watch like this understated.
