The Watch That Came Before The Slogan.
In 1996, Patek Philippe introduced one of the most successful advertising campaigns ever created in watchmaking:
"You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation."
Most collectors know the slogan.
What is often forgotten is that the idea behind it had already been proven for decades.
This Calatrava Ref. 1571 was manufactured in 1947 and sold on October 14th of that same year, according to its Extract from the Archives. Nearly eighty years later, it remains exactly the sort of watch that gave those words their credibility.
The timing is fitting. Europe was emerging from the aftermath of the Second World War and entering a period of rebuilding, optimism and renewed prosperity. Patek Philippe continued doing what it had done before the war and would continue doing long after it: creating elegant time-only watches with proportions, craftsmanship and design capable of outlasting trends.
The Ref. 1571 captures that philosophy beautifully.
Its foundation is wonderfully straightforward. A 35mm 18k yellow gold case surrounds a silvered raised enamel dial fitted with applied gold indices, Roman numerals at the cardinal points, slender gold hands and a subsidiary seconds register anchoring the lower half of the dial. Nearly every element is familiar to students of classic Calatravas.
Rather than simple straight lugs, the Ref. 1571 features an elaborate double teardrop design that transforms the personality of the watch. Each lug appears as a layered form of polished gold, creating depth and movement while maintaining the elegance expected of a mid-century Patek Philippe. Viewed from the side, the profile becomes particularly striking, with the lugs resembling folded ribbons emerging from the case band. They are expressive without becoming ornamental, and distinctive without disturbing the harmony of the overall design.
The case itself was manufactured by Fritz Baumgartner of Geneva, identified by the Key 2 hallmark found within the case. While Baumgartner is remembered today for producing some of the most important technical watch cases of the twentieth century, including Omega's pioneering Marine and later cases for Patek Philippe's first automatic wristwatch, the Ref. 1571 serves as a reminder of another side of the firm's expertise.
Time has left a gentle smoky patina across the silvered dial, creating warmth and character without diminishing its clarity. The raised enamel signature remains crisp, while the applied markers and gold hands continue to catch the light beautifully. There is an honesty to the aging process that feels entirely appropriate on a watch approaching its eighth decade of life.
Its proportions deserve mention as well. At approximately 35mm, the Ref. 1571 would have been considered generously sized in 1947 and remains remarkably wearable today. Many dress watches from the era can feel rooted to their period. This one feels surprisingly current.
Powering the watch is the manually wound Patek Philippe Calibre 12-120 PS, one of the great movements of its generation.
Someone acquired this watch in October of 1947 and began a relationship with an object that was built to accompany a lifetime. It may have witnessed business ventures, family celebrations, major milestones and countless ordinary days in between. Decades later, it continues to perform the same task with the same grace.

Overall excellent vintage condition.
The 18k yellow gold case remains strong with well-defined double teardrop lugs, deep hallmarks between the lugs, and a pronounced case maker hallmark to the back of one lug.
The original silvered dial displays attractive and even aging throughout, with small blemishes noted around 12 o'clock, within the subsidiary seconds register, and around 6 o'clock.
The caseback shows light surface wear consistent with age and use.
The domed acrylic crystal shows minor signs of wear.
The gold hands remain in excellent condition.
Fitted with a black Patek Philippe crocodile strap and gold-plated A.W. tang buckle.
The manually wound Calibre 12-120 PS is running well at the time of photography.
