Caught Red-Handed.
Burgundy is usually ordered by the glass. We went for the wrist. This 1970s Boucheron Carré pairs a deep crimson lacquer dial with an exceptionally sharp 18k yellow gold case.
For collectors already fond of Cartier and Piaget, vintage Boucheron is a rewarding next stop. The Parisian jeweller’s watchmaking history stretches back to the 19th century, and its approach to wristwatches put case construction and the experience of wearing them at the centre of the design.
Carré is French for square, and the name suits this example down to its small, angular lugs. The broad bezel slopes towards the dial like the gilt frame around a painting, giving that rich red a proper setting. Gold hands and the Boucheron signature leave almost the entire surface to the colour. If stone dials drew you into collecting, there’s plenty here to keep that interest going.
The condition makes the case even more compelling. Unpolished and exceptionally well preserved, it retains the crisp edges that give the design its character. French eagle-head hallmarks, together with the caseback signature and serial number, remain sharply defined.
We debated the strap before committing to burgundy leather. With a red this good, doubling down felt entirely reasonable. A manual-wind movement completes a dress watch with plenty of Parisian charm and an easy place on wrists of any gender.
Boucheron still deserves more room in the conversation about great vintage dress watches. This Carré is our contribution, submitted in red.
