The Genta Heavyweight.

Gérald Genta gave many of watchmaking’s biggest names their defining designs. Under his own name, however, he could indulge every idea that would have made a corporate boardroom nervous.

His wife and business partner Evelyne managed the factory, logistics and client relationships, leaving Gérald free to sketch. Their manufacture became known for small runs, prototypes and one-off commissions, often created for a single collector. It was not the simplest route to building an empire, but repetition held little interest for him. Once a watch was made, his attention had usually moved on to the next sheet of paper.

The Success chronograph captures that freedom rather well. Made during the 1990s, reference G.3388.7 takes Genta’s familiar octagon and gives it considerably more theatre. The 36mm case was manufactured in 18K yellow gold by Doné-Baume SA, one of Switzerland’s leading specialist case makers. Its stepped construction, exposed screws and rounded corner accents carry a trace of the Royal Oak, although the execution belongs entirely to Genta’s more flamboyant period.

The similarities end rather abruptly at the crown. His signature beaded “bowler hat” design borrows the cabochon idea associated with Cartier and turns it into something wonderfully eccentric. Chronograph pushers sit above and below, while the case flows directly into a five-row gold bracelet made from alternating rectangular and rounded links.

Genta was also unusually early to carbon fibre, introducing the material into his watches around 1988. Here it forms the deep black dial, giving the chronograph a technical character that feels surprisingly current more than three decades later. Three recessed registers are framed by silver chapter rings, while luminous hour plots, a tachymeter scale and a date window tucked between four and five complete a very busy dial that somehow remains easy to read.

Genta answered to his sketchbook rather than a marketing department. Carbon fibre, a faceted sapphire crystal and 155 grams of gold suggest he was having a very good day.

Inside is the Gérald Genta calibre 1185, an automatic chronograph movement with running seconds, 30-minute and 12-hour counters. The automatic winding matters here. This is a substantial gold bracelet watch weighing over 155 grams, yet it has the mechanical specifications to support all that visual ambition.

Its best detail may also be the hardest to photograph. Genta commissioned a faceted sapphire crystal cut to follow the octagonal form of the case, at a time when most manufacturers were content to fit conventional round crystals. Viewed from an angle, the crystal reveals another octagon above the dial and repeats the case design in transparent form. It is the sort of expensive, technically difficult detail that explains why his watches still feel so personal.

The bracelet is fully linked, fits wrists up to approximately 7.75 inches and includes eight removable links, three of which are not pictured. Altogether, the watch is a compelling piece from Genta’s postmodern period: carbon fibre, yellow gold, an integrated bracelet and a proper automatic chronograph, all filtered through the mind of an artist who was never particularly interested in making the same watch twice.

Presented in excellent overall condition with minimal signs of wear.

The 18K yellow gold case retains its stepped profile, exposed screws and rounded corner details, with light surface marks visible under close inspection.

The original black carbon fibre dial is very well preserved, with clean printing, recessed silver registers and intact luminous plots.

The caseback retains clear Gérald Genta engravings, reference G.3388.7, serial number 64427, Swiss hallmarks and 750 gold stamp.

The original hands are well preserved, and the faceted sapphire crystal is free from notable chips.

The integrated 18K yellow gold bracelet and signed folding clasp are in excellent condition. The bracelet is fully linked, includes eight removable links and fits wrists up to approximately 7.75 inches. Three included links are not pictured.

The Gérald Genta calibre 1185 automatic movement is running, with the chronograph and date functions operating correctly at the time of cataloguing.
