Tubogas bracelets began with a rather industrial reference point: the flexible metal tubing used for gas lines in the early twentieth century. Fine jewellers turned the same coiled appearance into bracelets that could bend, compress and return naturally to their curved form. It was engineering with considerably better dinner plans.
This Jaeger-LeCoultre from the 1950s pairs a tubogas-style bracelet with an exceptionally small 16mm circular case, all rendered in 18k pink gold. The bracelet’s closely spaced ridges create a continuous tubular form that curves naturally around the wrist. It can be flattened, flexed and opened at the clasp, yet it settles back into its original shape once worn.
The tiny watch head sits between elongated lugs, interrupting the bracelet just enough to remind you that there is a mechanical watch hiding inside. Its movement is wound from the back, allowing the case to remain compact without a conventional crown protruding from its side.
Then there is the colour. Pink gold was a less common choice during this period, and Jaeger-LeCoultre doubled down with a salmon dial. Arabic numerals at the quarters are joined by tapered hour markers and blued steel hands, giving the dial remarkable legibility for something only slightly larger than a shirt button.
The circular case against the tubular bracelet makes the whole design feel playful but beautifully resolved. It is part watch, part gold bracelet and one very persuasive argument for pink on pink.
