The Original Club Sport.
The Reverso may look like a dress watch today, but it was born on the polo field.
In 1930, Swiss businessman César de Trey travelled to India, where British army officers challenged him to find a wristwatch capable of surviving a polo match. His solution was wonderfully practical: a case that could slide from its cradle and turn over, placing solid metal between the crystal and an incoming polo ball. René-Alfred Chauvot designed the swivelling case, and the Reverso entered production in 1931.
It was a sports watch for the age of tailored jackets, private clubs and people who somehow remained well dressed while riding horses at speed.
By the 1990s, the Reverso had long since left the polo field, but Jaeger-LeCoultre was still making it with proportions closely tied to the original. This Reverso Classique measures approximately 23mm across and 34mm long before the lugs, or 39mm overall. It feels compact without becoming dainty, preserving the elegance that made the design work in the first place.
That sizing also places it in a particularly good window. A decade later, watches were heading toward Panerai proportions, along with larger trucks, larger sunglasses and generally larger everything. Contemporary Reversos are beautifully made, though many have grown well beyond the dimensions that made the early watches so appealing. Here, you get the vintage profile with the construction and reliability of a far newer watch.
The choice of metal makes this example even more unusual. Steel, yellow gold and two-tone Reversos are all relatively plentiful. Rose gold examples are not, particularly when paired with a black dial. The warmth of the 18k case against the black surface gives this familiar design a much richer character.
The dial draws heavily from the Art Deco vocabulary of the original Reverso. Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 share the surface with faceted markers, circular accents at 3 and 9, an interior minute track and sharply bevelled dauphine hands. There is plenty happening, yet it remains clean and easy to read.
Turn the case over and its sporting origins return. The polished metal reverse was originally armour for the dial and later became a natural place for initials, family crests and personal engravings. This one remains blank, leaving the next owner to decide whether it should stay that way.
Powered by a manual-wound Jaeger-LeCoultre movement and very well preserved throughout, this is the Reverso at its sweet spot: original proportions, more modern construction and a rose-gold and black combination that is genuinely difficult to find. The polo mallet remains optional.

The watch is very well preserved overall, with light signs of careful wear.
The 18k rose gold case retains strong proportions and crisp gadroons, with fine surface marks consistent with age and a smooth, secure reversing action.
The black dial is excellent, with well-preserved printing, applied markers and interior minute track.
The caseback retains its brushed finish, with the Jaeger-LeCoultre engravings, reference number and serial number present and clearly visible.
The dauphine hands show minor oxidation under magnification that is not visible to the naked eye, while the crystal is well preserved.
The watch is fitted to a black lizard strap with a generic gold-tone buckle.
The manual-wound Jaeger-LeCoultre movement is functioning as intended at the time of cataloguing.
