Patek Philippe Onyx and Mother-of-Pearl 3859

Patek Philippe is best known for the enduring good taste of the Calatrava, the spare elegance of the Golden Ellipse and a catalogue of complications that can make a collector reach for an encyclopedia. Reference 3859 comes from a more playful corner of Geneva.

During the 1980s, watchmakers continued exploring hardstone and exotic dials following the stone-dial craze that defined much of the previous decade. Patek joined the party in its own way, setting a glossy black onyx centre inside a broad mother-of-pearl border. The pairing resembles a black-tie checkerboard, stripped of hour markers and finished with gold dauphine hands. Timekeeping etiquette has rarely looked this good.

The 28mm case is equally distinctive. Its rectangular form has clipped corners reminiscent of the Cartier Ceinture, while the sides rise through a series of steps that give the 18k yellow gold case wonderful depth. An onyx cabochon set into the crown completes the black-and-white palette with the sort of detail that makes the entire design feel resolved.

Mother-of-pearl keeps the dial from becoming overly formal. Its natural surface ranges from pearl white to cloudy grey with occasional metallic tones, lending softness to the hard black centre. Both materials remain beautifully preserved without cracks or blemishes, which is especially important on a dial assembled from natural materials.

Inside is Patek Philippe’s manual-wound caliber 177, an ultra-thin 18-jewel movement well suited to refined dress watches. The watch is paired with a black leather strap and its original period-correct 18k Patek Philippe buckle.

Reference 3859 belongs to the part of Patek’s history where the house loosened its tie by half an inch. The workmanship remains thoroughly Geneva, but the mood is pure 1980s.
