Three Watches in One.

Long before watches became permanently attached to our wrists, Rolex made one that was happy almost anywhere.

Introduced during the 1930s, the Girouette arrived as pocket watches were giving way to wristwatches. Rolex approached that awkward transitional period with a wonderfully practical idea: place a traditional watch inside a leather-covered steel carrier, mount it on a rotating hinge and let its owner decide how to use it.

The watch itself lifts from its holder and rotates on a ball-bearing hinge. Its steel case remains remarkably sharp and appears unpolished, while the original leather covering has developed the sort of honest wear that makes the entire object feel more personal. The cream dial has applied Arabic numerals, blued steel hands and a subsidiary seconds display at six, all powered by a manual-wound Rolex movement.

"Rolex solved the pocket-watch problem before most of us knew there was one."

Its metal handle also opens up a few modern possibilities. Add a leather cord and wear it around the neck, attach a strap, keep it in a jacket pocket or stand it beside the bed. The recent Audemars Piguet x Swatch Royal Pop pocket-watch collaboration has made the format feel current again, although the Girouette was already working through these ideas nearly ninety years ago.

Collectors often talk about versatility as though it were a recent discovery. Rolex put it in a leather case in 1937 and included instructions.

The watch is exceptionally well preserved for its age, with an attractive and largely original appearance throughout.

The steel watch case appears unpolished and retains crisp edges, with light surface wear consistent with age.

The original cream dial is clean and evenly aged, with applied Arabic numerals, a subsidiary seconds register and clear Rolex signature.

The plain steel caseback shows light surface marks consistent with age.

The original blued steel hands remain well preserved, and the glass is clear with minor age-related wear.

The original leather-covered carrier remains in very good vintage condition, showing surface wear, softened edges and areas of colour loss from use.

The hinged rotating mechanism operates correctly, allowing the watch to be lifted, reversed and positioned upright.

The manual-wound Rolex movement is functioning as intended.
