A Lovely Little Square.
This Vacheron Constantin has the charm of a little gold powder compact, right down to its softly rounded corners. The lovely part is how that same shape repeats along the wrist, turning an 18 × 21mm watch into the centre of a beautifully matched bracelet.
Dating to the 1970s, the Carrée takes its name from the French word for square. Here, the corners are softened into a cushion shape, framed in factory-set diamonds and echoed by open gold links on either side. Smaller connectors, each set with three diamonds, join the links together. The spaces between them give the design an airy feel, while the diamonds carry the decoration all the way around. It’s a particularly tasteful arrangement of 18k yellow gold and sparkle.
The champagne sunburst dial keeps the timekeeping simple, with faceted dauphine hands, the Vacheron Constantin signature and an applied Maltese cross. Winding takes place at the back, leaving the case’s rounded outline free of a projecting crown. Swiss-made and imported for the French market, this example brings a pleasing mechanical detail to a watch with plenty of jewellery appeal.
My favourite part might be the clasp. A small side lever releases a hinged cover that opens like a book, with a diamond-centred Maltese cross decorating its brushed gold surface. It’s the sort of detail you’ll find yourself demonstrating to someone over dinner, whether they asked or not.
At approximately 40 grams, there’s a satisfying amount of gold here. The bracelet fits wrists up to approximately 6.6 inches and can be shortened by a jeweller. Beautifully preserved, elegantly proportioned and worth turning over before you put it on.

The watch presents in excellent overall cosmetic condition with light signs of wear.
The 18k yellow gold case retains its rounded contours and diamond-set bezel, with fine surface marks.
The champagne sunburst dial retains clear printing and its applied Maltese cross, with light ageing around the perimeter.
The caseback shows light surface marks, with legible numbering and visible hallmarks.
The dauphine hands and sapphire crystal appear well preserved.
The gold bracelet retains its open-link form and diamond-set connectors, with light surface marks and a well-preserved Maltese cross clasp.
The back-winding manual movement has been inspected and is keeping accurate time.
