A Different Take On The Bamboo.

By the 1970s Piaget had already mastered the art of ultra-thin watchmaking, but what makes this one interesting is where they chose to spend their energy. Not on cutting stone dials. Not on complications. On the case. And what a case it is.

The bamboo motif wraps itself around the oval form in a way that feels almost sculpted rather than manufactured. Each segment has its own rhythm, its own slight variation, giving the whole thing a kind of organic flow. It doesn’t try to be symmetrical for the sake of it. It leans into that slightly irregular, almost melting quality that gives a slight nod to Dali.

If the case is doing all the talking, the dial knows to stay out of the way. Champagne sunburst, Roman numerals, slender black hands. Clean, legible, and just enough contrast to ground the piece. It’s a smart decision because anything more would’ve been distacting.

Then there’s the double signature. Piaget on the dial, with Van Cleef & Arpels just below. This wasn’t uncommon at the time as Van Cleef would retail Piaget watches through their boutiques, selecting pieces that aligned with their own design language. The result is something that feels curated rather than simply co-branded.

“Piaget handled the mechanics, Van Cleef chose the stage. The case stole the show.”

On the wrist, it wears exactly how you’d hope. The 25 by 31 millimeter case sits comfortably, but the shape and those sculpted edges give it more presence than the numbers suggest.

Inside is Piaget’s caliber 9P, one of the great ultra-thin movements of the era. Reliable, refined, and exactly what you’d expect from a brand that built its reputation on making thin feel substantial.

The Cartier bamboo has become its own category at this point, with insane prices to match. This is a different way in. Same era, same appetite for design, but with Piaget’s hand guiding the execution. And arguably, a little more playful (and afforadable).

The watch is in overall very good vintage condition with honest signs of wear consistent with age.

The 18k yellow gold case shows light surface wear with well-preserved bamboo detailing and strong definition throughout.

The champagne sunburst dial is clean and well-preserved with crisp Roman numerals and clear Piaget and Van Cleef & Arpels signatures.

The caseback retains its hallmarks and engravings, visible and intact.

The crystal is in very good condition with no notable flaws. Slight discoloration on the hands.

The watch is fitted with its original black Piaget leather strap and 18k yellow gold Piaget buckle.

The movement is running well and keeping time as expected.
