The French Tube.

This is one of those watches where the bracelet completely hijacks the conversation.

At first glance, it almost doesn’t register as a watch at all. You notice the woven gold tube first, then the way it curves, then the weight of it in the hand. Somewhere after that, you realize there’s a tiny dial tucked into the middle.

Made by Vacheron Constantin and retailed by Hermès in the 1960s, this bracelet watch captures a moment when the lines between jewelry houses and watchmakers became wonderfully blurred. Hermès had long collaborated with respected Swiss manufactures during this period, pairing their Parisian eye for form with movements from names that already carried centuries of watchmaking credibility. By the mid-century era, Vacheron Constantin was already producing some of the finest ultra-thin calibres in Geneva, supplying elegant mechanical movements for clients who valued proportion and craftsmanship over sheer size or complexity.

The watch itself measures just 11.5mm wide, yet it feels surprisingly substantial on the wrist. Much of that comes from the bracelet. The woven gold construction resembles chainmail or tightly braided nautical rope, which feels perfectly aligned with Hermès and its long association with equestrian and travel heritage. It has a soft springiness when handled, allowing it to naturally contour around the wrist rather than wearing stiff like most bracelet watches from the era.

“Vacheron made the movement. Hermès made sure nobody could stop staring at the bracelet.”

And then there’s the dial sitting within it all.

Simple champagne brushing, thin black painted indices, and blued steel hands. The proportions feel closer to something Cartier or Boucheron might have produced during the same period, which makes the unsigned dial even more charming. Before oversized branding became central to modern watch design, pieces like this relied entirely on execution and form to communicate quality.

The profile stays remarkably clean thanks to Vacheron Constantin’s manually wound calibre 1005, operated through a discreet back-winding system rather than a protruding side crown. It allows the bracelet to maintain an uninterrupted silhouette around the wrist, almost like a gold bangle that happens to tell time.

Collectors who appreciate French jewelry cases will enjoy the details hidden throughout. The bracelet is signed Hermès near the clasp, while the side of the case is hand engraved Vacheron & Constantin. French eagle hallmarks confirm the 18k gold purity, and the case itself was produced by the respected French maker De Travers, known for supplying important maisons during this era.

Finding these collaborations today is difficult enough. Finding one this preserved is another matter entirely.

Overall, this watch presents in exceptional vintage condition with beautifully preserved woven gold construction and crisp engravings throughout.

The 18k yellow gold case remains strong, showing honest light signs of wear consistent with age.

The champagne dial remains very well preserved with fine vertical brushing, black painted indices, and vivid blued steel hands.

The side of the case retains deep Vacheron & Constantin engraving, while the bracelet clasp remains signed Hermès with French eagle hallmarks visible throughout.

The crystal is clean and the hands retain strong coloration.

The woven bracelet remains remarkably tight with excellent spring and articulation, fitting wrists up to approximately 6.6 inches.

The manually wound Vacheron Constantin calibre 1005 is keeping accurate time.
